Granny Squares Blanket – Free Crochet Pattern

Inside: Free Granny Squares Blanket crochet pattern. Includes written instructions for 2 styles of granny square, tools to help you design your blanket and links to fully captioned tutorial videos.

Granny squares are absolute classics in the crochet world!

They are easy to make and you can make loads of small ones or one large one to make a blanket. It’s all up to YOU.

The Granny Squares Blanket pattern is set up to help you become the designer. I’ve laid out the steps below to help you plan out your own blanket. Then I’ve included tutorial videos teaching you how to crochet the granny squares and how to seam granny squares. The squares are no good if you don’t know how to put them together, right?

A stack of granny squares waiting to become a blanket.

The Granny Square Blankets pattern teaches you how to create a custom blanket using two methods and two styles of granny squares. The project was designed to go with Lessons 6 and 7 of my How to Crochet series

Pattern includes written instructions for 2 styles of granny squares, guides to help plan your blanket and links to fully captioned tutorial videos for both left and right handed crocheters teaching both granny squares and how to seam them.

NOTES

This pattern includes 2 styles of granny squares: classic and solid.  The classic granny square uses clusters of stitches with eyelets in between to make a light, airy square.  This is the traditional granny square you’ve seen.  I also included a solid square that only has eyelets at each corner.  This one makes a solid square with diagonal lines of eyelets from corner to corner.  It’s a warmer, cozier option.  Choose one style to use for your blanket or combine both!

There are also two methods for making your blanket: one giant square or several squares sewn together.  The beauty of the granny square is that you can just keep going and make a square as large as you want.  But if you want to mix and match colors or have an easy project when you’re on the go, you can make small squares and sew them together to make the blanket.

  1. Choose your shape:  Square or Rectangle
    1. Square: Decide if you want one large granny square or several smaller ones.
    2. Rectangle, you will be making squares to seam together.
  1. Choose your style: Classic or Solid.
  2. Decide the size of your finished blanket*.
  3. Square:  Get started crocheting and stop your square when you reach the finished size!
Rectangle:  Decide how big you want your squares to be and how many you need.  Example:  For a 20 x 30 stroller blanket, you could use either of these layouts:  20 5” squares or 6 10” squares.
These blanket designs are the same size, but have very different layouts.
I suggest laying out your granny square design in a spreadsheet or on graph paper.

*My Blanket Sizes Chart gives common sizes for a variety of blankets from baby loveys to king size beds.

Make the number of squares needed for your Granny Squares Blanket then seam them together.

Tips for seaming granny squares:

  • Lay all the squares (right-side up) as you need them for your blanket design.
  • Choose ONE of the colors from your blanket for seaming. The seam will be mostly invisible so any of the colors will work.
  • Make sure you have enough yarn to work 3 times the length of your seam.
  • Seam your squares with the right sides together.
  • Seam one row (or column) at a time, then seam those long pieces together.
