Crochet a Decorative Accent Basket for a Quick Gift

It all started with a yarn box subscription.

Subscriptions are a great way to get exposed to new yarn types. In my Yarn Yay box earlier in the year I got two skeins of Tshirt yarn from We Are Knitters.

I have tried Tshirt yarn in the past and I even have a video tutorial on how to make your own. But ithis yarn was so soft it inspired me to try something a little different than your plain crochet basket.

I started playing around with some stitch patterns and after much trial and error (okay, more than one error!) I came up with a basket I liked.

It’s light and airy and has some flair to it, especially at the top. I think the big size is perfect for holding yarn, craft supplies or even small toys. As a matter of fact, my daughter claimed this one to store her craft paints.

I jotted down the pattern and then decided to try it in a smaller size using medium (#4) weight yarn. Not only did it come out great it’s even more useful. This little one makes a great quick crochet gift to hold craft notions, keys, chocolate, trinkets or even an LED votive candle like I did.

While the pattern only lists two sizes you can make this in using any size yarn. If you hsve some extra bulky weight yarn in your stash grab it and go. Just use the crochet hook size that is recommended for the yarn you choose.

MATERIALS

Yarn
Small: Approx. 60 yds. Medium (#4) weight yarn
Caron Little Crafties (One Ball: 20 g/0.7 oz, 58 m/63 yds) used in sample.

Large: Approx. 150 yds. Super Bulky (#6) weight T-shirt yarn
We Are Knitters The Fabric Yarn used in sample.  (NOTE: The yarn I used is discontinued, but Bobilon 7-9mm T Shirt Yarn is a good substitute or you can make your own T-shirt yarn using my tutorial:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RALBCAGmYKQ) 

Hook
Small: US Size 7 (4.5 mm) hook
Large: US Size M/N-13 (9 mm) hook
Furls Odyssey G+ and N hooks in Black & Nickel used in sample.

Tapestry needle to seam and weave in ends.

dc = double crochet
hdc = half-double crochet
rep = repeat
sc = single crochet

MEASUREMENTS
Small: 5” wide*  3.25” tall with 3.5” opening
Large: 11” wide* x 7” tall with 7” opening
*At widest point (base is narrower)

NOTES 

This pattern is adaptable to use any size yarn and hook. 

This pattern uses two special stitches detailed below:

Feather Stitch Pattern:

The Feather stitch is an elongated stitch worked over a ch1 space, the row below and another stitch.  It involves pulling up several loops and leaving them on your hook as you work.  The stitch is shown in the tutorial video, but for more detail you’ll want to see the full blog post about the stitch pattern: How to Crochet: Feather Stitch Pattern.

Beginning Feather st: Yarn over, insert hook into last ch-1 sp of previous row, yarn over and pull up a loop level with loops on the hook (3 loops on hook), yarn over, insert hook into ch-1 space one row below or skipped stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop elongated and now level with loops on the hook (5 loops on hook), yarn over, insert hook in next ch-1 sp, yarn over and pull up a loop in line with loops on the hook, yarn over and pull through all 7 loops on the hook. (Note: Loops pulled up will be level with the crochet and some will be more elongated than others).

Feather st: Yarn over, insert hook into same ch-1 sp as last feather, yarn over and pull up a loop level with loops on the hook (3 loops on hook), yarn over, insert hook into skipped st or ch-1 sp one row below same sp, yarn over and pull up a loop elongated and now level with loops on the hook (5 loops on hook) yarn over, insert hook in next ch-1 sp, yarn over and pull up a loop in line with loops on the hook, yarn over and pull through all 7 loops on the hook. 

Crab Stitch Pattern 
The Crab stitch is a decorative border worked in REVERSE.  That means instead of working toward the tip of your crochet hook you work backwards.  

1. Put your crochet hook through the stitch BEFORE the current stitch. (Instead of the stitch toward the tip of your hook it will be the one toward the handle.) TIP: Point your hook straight down and angle it through the stitch.
2. Pull a loop through the stitch then twist the hook back to your normal working position. Be sure to keep your tension loose so the border doesn’t pucker the edge of your work.
3. Yarnover and pull through both loops on your hook.

INSTRUCTIONS

Ch5. Sl st in last chain to make circle. Ch1 (doesn’t count as st).

Rnd 1: 8 Hdc in ctr of circle. Sl st to join in the round. Ch1.

Rnd 2: 2 Hdc in each st. Sl st to join. Ch1. (16 sts).

Rnd 3: *2 Hdc in 1st st. 1 Hdc in next st. Repeat from * to end. Sl st to join. Ch1. (24 sts).

Rnd 4: 2 Hdc in each st. Sl st to join. Ch1. (48 sts).

Rnd 5: *1 Hdc in st. Ch1. Skip next st. Repeat from * to end. Sl st to join. Ch1.

Rnd 6: Beginning feather st, ch 1,*work Feather st, ch 1. Rep from * to last st.  Sl st at beg of 1st feather st. Ch5 (counts as Dc & Ch 1 for next rnd.)

Rnd 7: *Dc in next Ch space. Ch1. Rep from * to end. Sl st in 4th ch of beg ch. Ch1.

Rnd 8: *1 Hdc, Ch1, 1 Hdc, Ch1 in same Ch space. In next Ch sp rep from * to end. Sl st to join at 1st Hdc. Ch 4 (counts as Hdc & Ch1 for next round).

Rnd 9: *Hdc in Ch sp. Ch 1. In next Ch sp rep from * to end of Rnd. Skip last Ch sp and Sl st in 3rd ch on beg ch. Ch 5 (counts as Hdc & Ch2 for next round).

Rnd 10: *In 2nd Ch sp Hdc. Ch 2. rep from * to end. Skip last 2 Ch sp and Sl st in 3rd ch on beg chain. Ch3.

Rnd 11: In 1st Ch sp *Hdc in Ch sp. Ch 1. In next Ch sp, rep from * to end. Sl st in 2nd Ch on beg chain. Ch1.

Rnd 12: *Hdc in each st and ch sp. Rep from * to end. Sl st in beg hdc chain to join. (48 sts). [Fasten off here for shorter basket option.]

Rnd 13: *Ch5, Sl st in 4th st. Rep from * to end when only 1 st left in row below.

Rnd 14: *Ch5, Sl st in ch sp. Rep from * to end of Rnd. Ch 5, Sl st in 3rd ch of 1st Ch 5.

Rnd 15: Working in the reverse direction, work 3 Crab sts in each chain. On last chain of rnd make 2 crab sts and fasten off. Weave in tails.
