Inside: Learn how to crochet the 2-color silt stitch pattern with this free pattern and video tutorial.
The silt stitch creates beautiful, nubby rows when you crochet it in one color. But if you want to turn those subtle stripes into a bolder statement, I give you the 2-color silt stitch design.

Switching color every 2 rows allows you to add a colorful stripe in this stitch. And it’s easy to carry the unused color along the edge of your work so you have only a few yarn tails to weave in. Don’t worry about the color change! I cover exactly how to do it in detail in the tutorial video below.
I chose bold, bright colors when I made the Holiday Pinstripe Scarf below. But this stitch looks just as good with subtle color changes using ombres or neutrals. I haven’t tested it yet, but you could even use a solid with a variegated for an even more dramatic look.
This scarf pattern walks you through how to work the stitch pattern from start to finish. If you want to work a smaller sample as a test, just be sure to use an odd number of chains when starting.
Let’s get started!

NOTES
This scarf uses the silt stitch pattern. It uses a multiple of 2 + 1 with a simple 1 row repeat for the design. However, you need 2 rows to create the raised texture for each color stripe.
Change hook size up or down to fit your tension to get the correct size.
Color changing tips: Change color at the end of the row on the last stitch. Pull through the very last loop in the new color. Carry yarn up the side of the fabric by twisting the two colors to lock previous yarn along the edge before starting turning your work and starting the new row. See video for demonstration.
To lengthen or shorten the scarf or if you plan to use a different yarn weight, I suggest using our Cast On Calculator to figure out how many stitches across you will need. (It’s not just for knitting!) Be sure to use a multiple of 2 + 1 (any odd number) for your starting chain.
