Inside: Learn how to crochet the silt stitch while you make the Easy Textured Toggle Cowl pattern. Includes written instructions and videos.
I recently discovered the silt stitch pattern and I love it.
It checks all my boxes:
- uses only basic crochet stitches (sc, hdc, dc) so it’s quick to learn
- has a small multiple (2 +1) so I can adapt it to any size
- has a short row repeat (only 1 row) that I can memorize without looking at the pattern

This stitch pattern creates beautifully textured rows that are slightly raised. I also like that it is fully reversible so it’s perfect for a variety of projects.
I started crocheting with it this summer and knew I had to teach it to you. So far, I’ve done the cowl pattern below, a striped scarf and a corner to corner blanket. (Did I mention yet how much I liked this stitch pattern?)

So, let’s get started!
How to Crochet the Silt Stitch using my Easy Textured Toggle Cowl Pattern
By Kristen Mangus
The crochet Easy Textured Toggle Cowl uses the silt stitch to create the nubby striped design. The cowl is worked flat and joined with toggles for a stylish, cozy look.
Pattern includes written instructions and links to fully captioned tutorial videos for both left and right handed crocheters.

NOTES
The silt stitch is the main stitch pattern for this cowl. It uses a multiple of 2 + 1 with a simple 1 row repeat for the design. However, since you need 2 rows to create the raised texture I suggest working an even number of rows.
The cowl can be made longer as an infinity scarf by adding rows until it reaches the desired length.
Change hook size up or down to fit your tension to get the correct size.
To use a different yarn weight I suggest using our Cast On Calculator to figure out how many stitches across you will need. (It’s not just for knitting!) Be sure to use a multiple of 2 + 1 for your starting chain.

How to Crochet the Silt Stitch:
Ch 27.
Foundation row: Sc in the 3rd ch from the hook. *Dc in the next ch, sc in the next ch*. Repeat from* across to the last 2 ch. Dc in next ch. Hdc in last ch. Turn.
Row 1: Ch 2. Sc in the 1st hdc. *Dc in the next dc, sc in the next sc*. Repeat from * across, ending with a hdc in the top of the turning ch. Turn.
Repeat Row 1 until 32” or desired length.
Fasten off. Weave in tail.
Sew 4 toggles evenly across the last row and weave in tails. Push toggle through fabric to close cowl. Wear with all toggles closed or leave 1-2 open for a collared look.
