Breezy Eyelet Hat is Double Knit in the Round!

Breezy Eyelet Hat is Double Knit in the Round!

Inside: Free breezy Eyelet Hat pattern that is double knit in the round. Includes written instructions for 2 sizes, photo tutorial and videos.

I’ve been enjoying revisiting my early days of double knitting on the loom. It’s been a challenge to explore new double knit techniques like eyelets.

And no DK series would be complete without a nod to the KB Rotating Double Knit Loom. This is the loom that opened up double knitting in the round and is a wonderful addition to your loom collection.

This loom allows you to create double knit hats and cowls. My Twisted Brioche Slouchy Tam and Twisted Brioche Cowl patterns are great examples of what you can make on this loom.

But I wanted to try and add something a little lighter.

This breezy Eyelet Hat is double knit in one piece in the round. It’s got the extra squishy texture you love in a double knit fabric, but the eyelets give it a light, airy feel. This brimless hat is perfect for cool spring or autumn days.

This pattern includes written instructions for 2 sizes, a photo tutorial for the cast on and tutorial videos for both right and left handed loom knitters.

NOTES

This pattern is written to work counter-clockwise, but I included a tutorial video below showing how to work this pattern in a clockwise direction around the loom.

All peg numbers mentioned in the pattern refer to peg pairs: one peg on the front (outside) board and one on the back (inside) board.

You will work around the loom twice in each round. Half the pegs are wrapped on the first rotation and the second rotation wraps all remaining pegs, ending on the 2nd to last peg (Peg 51 or 59).

INSTRUCTIONS

Stockinette (Double) Cast on:

Cast on 52 (60) pairs of pegs in Stockinette (Double) stitch pattern using the method below:

  1. Place slip knot on Peg 1 on OUTSIDE board.
  2. Then wrap around outside of Peg 2 on INSIDE board. (Do not Ewrap.)
  3. Next wrap around Peg 3 on OUTSIDE board.
  4. Continue wrapping pegs in a zig zag pattern wrapping the ODD pegs on the OUTSIDE board and EVEN pegs on the INSIDE board until you reach Peg 52 (60) on the INSIDE board.  Note: Your wrapped loom should look like the yarn snakes around every other peg in a continuous S shape.  Your yarn should not cross over itself.
  1. Guide yarn around back of peg and straight down to Peg 52 (60) on the OUTSIDE board.   Wrap the outside of Peg 52 (60).
  1. Continue a second time around the loom at the beginning in a zig zag pattern, wrapping the ODD pegs on the INSIDE board and EVEN pegs on the OUTSIDE board until you reach peg 51 (59) on the INSIDE board. All 52 (60) peg pairs are wrapped.
  1. Lay anchor yarn.
  2. Wrap all pegs again following steps 1-6. All pegs now have two loops.
  3. Knit the bottom loop over the top loop on all pegs. After knitting all pegs have 1 loop

Round 1: Knit [Wrap loom as detailed above during cast on and knit bottom loop over top loop.]

Repeat Row 1 once more.

Eyelet Stitch Pattern (Body):

TIP: Peg numbers listed in the instructions below are for pairs of pegs. Work the pegs on both the outside and inside boards at the same time. Example: If moving peg 3 to peg 2 you will move outside peg 3 to outside 2 and inside 3 to inside 2.

Round 2: Before wrapping, move loops from odd pegs starting at Peg 3 to 2, then 5 to 4, and so on until Peg 1 to 52 (60). Wrap loom as above in stockinette  (including empty pegs) and knit off all pegs so 1 loop remains*.

[*Pegs with 1 loop: skip, pegs with 2 loops: knit bottom loop over top loop, pegs with 3 loops: knit the bottom 2 loops over the top loop.]

Round 3: Repeat Round 1.

Round 4: Before wrapping, move loops from even pegs starting at Peg 2 to 1, Peg 4 to 3, and so on until Peg 52 to 51 (60 to 59). Wrap loom (including empty pegs) and knit off all pegs so 1 loop remains*.

Round 5: Repeat Round 1.

Round 6: Repeat Rounds 2-5 until knitting is 6” (15 cm) long. Gently tug downward on knitting to ease gauge before measuring. Brim should touch base of loom.

Stockinette Top (crown):

Round 7: Repeat Round 1 until knitting is approximately 8” (20.5 cm) or to desired length. Tug brim as needed to bring your work down between the looms.

Move even pegs to odd pegs on inside and outside boards. Knit over all loops on loom so that only 1 loop remains on every other peg.

Now bring the loops from the inside loom to the outside loom so that there are 2 loops on every other peg on the outside loom. Knit over all loops on the outside loom. Break yarn, leaving an 18” long tail. Thread tail through remaining sts, taking the hat off the loom and drawing up the top of the hat.

Gently gather top of hat. Go around top of hat once more and secure tight closure. Tie and knot to inside of hat. Weave in yarn tails.

Bind off at Anchor yarn:  With the crochet hook, pick up both loops of one rib at yarn tail.  Pull one through the other.  Pick up the next loop of the next rib, and pull one closest to hook thru the other.  Do this loosely around the entire brim of the hat.  Once complete, knot the last loop with yarn tail and weave in ends.  Gently pull out the anchor yarn to remove.
