Inside: Free pattern for the loom knit Twisted Brioche Cowl including detailed instructions and tutorial videos for both right and left handed loom knitters.

Show off your style in the Twisted Brioche Cowl. Made to match with our Twisted Brioche Slouchy Tam, this two-color cowl uses a cable twist brioche stitch to create the dense, squishy texture.  Note: This cowl is reversible, but the cable twists are only on the outside of the cowl.  The inside of the cowl has a reverse color effect and standard brioche pattern.

NOTES

This pattern is written to work counter-clockwise. When shifting stitches directions are written referring to right and left.  You may work this pattern clockwise, but must reverse all pattern instructions for the twist stitches and cable wrapping technique.

Size:  You cannot adjust the circumference of the cowl, but to adjust the height you can add or remove repeats.   Each repeat adds 1.75” (4.5 cm).

Stockinette Cast On – Place slip knot on first peg of OUTSIDE loom.  Wrap around the first peg of the INSIDE loom in a U shape.  Do NOT Ewrap the pegs for this cast on!  Bring working yarn back to front and wrap Peg 2 of the OUTSIDE loom. Continue around the loom wrapping the pegs in order from outside to inside.  Note: Your wrapped loom should look like the yarn snakes around the pegs in a continuous S shape.  Your yarn should not cross over itself.

Chunky Open Rib Stitch (Ribbing) –

  1. SETUP: Beginning with Peg 2, move every other loop to the peg before on OUTSIDE loom only.  Move loop on Peg 2 to Peg 1, from Peg 4 to Peg 3, etc. around the loom. This leaves 2 loops on every other peg with an empty peg between.  Leave the loops on the inside loom alone.
  2. ROUND 1: The Chunky Rib is created by wrapping around the loom 2 times as follows:
    1. Wrap Peg 1 on the outside then Peg 3 on the inside loom.  Next wrap Peg 3 on the outside loom followed by Peg 5 on the inside. Continue wrapping every other peg on both the inside and outside. NOTE: On the outside loom always wrap the pegs with loops not the empty pegs. When finished the outside loom has 3 loops on every other peg. Do not knit over any of the loops.
    2. Wrap the loom again beginning with Peg 1 on the inside, then Peg 1 on outside to Peg 2 on the inside loom.  Next wrap from Peg 3 on the outside loom to Peg 4 on the inside. Continue wrapping every other peg on both the inside and outside. NOTE: On the outside loom always wrap the pegs with loops not the empty pegs. When finished the outside loom has 4 loops on every other peg and the inside has 2 loops on every peg
    3. Knit the bottom 2 loops over top 2 loops on the outside loom and bottom loop over top loop on the inside loom. Do nothing to the empty pegs on the outside loom. This completes Round 1.

Stockinette Stitch – Wrap yarn around first peg of OUTSIDE loom.  Wrap around the first peg of the INSIDE loom in a U shape.  Do NOT Ewrap the pegs!  Bring working yarn back to front and wrap Peg 2 of the OUTSIDE loom. Continue around loom wrapping the pegs in order from outside to inside.

[NOTE: This part of the pattern is covered in Video 2: Twisted Brioche Cowl]

Prepare to work bind off by moving loop from Peg 1 to Peg 2. Repeat moving top loop from odd pegs to even pegs. All pegs now have 1 loop each.

Relaxed Ribbed Basic Bind off:

Move the stitch from Peg 1 of the INSIDE loom to Peg 1 of the OUTSIDE loom. Continue moving each stitch from the inside loom to the corresponding peg of the outside loom.  You will now have 2 stitches on each peg of the outside loom. Do NOT knit.

The following sequence will make a relaxed ribbed basic bind off which adds extra yarn to have a larger opening in the round.

Uwrap knit Peg 1 lifting both bottom loops over at the same time (this will be the same on all following pegs). Purl Peg 2. Move stitch from Peg 2 and place on Peg 1. Knit over st. Leave st in place for now; from here forward there will be 1 empty peg after each peg 1 to allow for extra yarn.

*Uwrap knit Peg 2 then place on Peg 1. Uwrap and Knit over st. Move st over one peg; leaving an empty peg between next st. Purl Peg 2 then place on Peg 1. Uwrap and Knit over st. Move st over one peg. Rep from * alternating knit and Purl sts until 1 st rem. Cut yarn tail and pull through to fasten off.

Once all stitches are bound off you may want to release the outside loom from the stand to take the cowl off, if using a thicker/ larger gauge yarn than recommended.

Bind off at Anchor yarn:

With the crochet hook, pick up both loops of one rib at yarn tail.  Pull one thru the other.  Pick up the next loop of the next rib, and pull one closest to hook thru the other.  Do this loosely around the entire bottom edge of the cowl.  Once complete, knot the last loop with yarn tail and weave in ends.  Gently pull out the anchor yarn to remove.

Weave in any yarn tails. Both edges should match.

TUTORIAL VIDEOS

The tutorials for this cowl are split into 2 videos.  The first video covers the cast on through Round 63 and how to finish the anchor yarn. This video is from my Slouchy Tam hat pattern.  The bottom ribbing of the cowl is called the hat brim in this video, but the technique is the same.  [NOTE: The cowl uses 2 fewer rounds of ribbing than the hat shown in the video.]  The second video covers the top ribbing and bind off for the cowl.
