Easy Crochet Marshmallow Moccasin Baby Booties!

Easy Crochet Marshmallow Moccasin Baby Booties!

Inside: Free crochet Marshmallow Moccasin Baby Booties pattern with written instructions for 3 sizes from 0-12 months and tutorial videos.

Don’t you love the nubby texture of the marshmallow stitch? I do!

So I decided to use this stitch pattern in my crochet Marshmallow Moccasin Baby Booties. These baby booties are a classic foldover design so they are simple and fast to make.

I like using this design because you crochet the entire bootie as a flat panel then seam it on the sides and toe. There’s no special shaping to learn so even a beginner can make them.

This design uses the marshmallow stitch pattern for just the top of the bootie. After working the marshmallow section, you work into the center of the foundation chain to make the single crochet sole of the bootie. If you aren’t familiar with how to make this style of moccasin, don’t worry! I show it all on the video and also have a diagram below with color coded seams to show you exactly how to sew up the bootie.

I should mention that foldover booties are meant for warmth, not walking. Even using some of my custom fit tips below to get a snugger fit, they don’t offer the support new walkers need.

This crochet pattern includes written instructions for 3 sizes to fit babies from 0 to 12 months plus fully captioned tutorial videos for both right and left handed crocheters.

NOTES

This pattern uses the classic T-shaped foldover bootie design.  You work the widest part first then the Footbed/Sole is added to the middle of the foundation chain. When you’re done crocheting you fold the wide side edges to the bottom edge to complete each bootie.  See Baby Bootie Assembly Diagram for placement and measurements. NOTE: I included detailed measurements of each section, but due to changes in yarn and tension your measurements may not match up exactly and that’s okay.  Feel free to go up or down a hook size to adjust the bootie.

When starting your bootie, leave an 18” tail before your beginning slip knot. The long tail will be used for seaming.

Custom Fit Tips:

  1. You may want to sew over the diagonal overlapped portion on the top of the bootie for a better fit. Since babies’ feet differ so much this seam may need to be be shorter for one and longer for another.
  2. You can sew a small strip of elastic on the inside of the bootie at the ankle.

INSTRUCTIONS

Make 2

Chain 26 (32, 44) making sure to leave an 18” tail for seaming.

Foundation Row: Sc into the back hump of second chain from hook, *sc into the next back hump in the chain, rep from * to end of row.

Row 2: Ch 2, turn, 2 dc in 1st stitch. Skip next 2 sts, *(sc, 2 dc) in next st, skip next 2 sts. Rep from * across. Sc in top of turning ch.

Repeat Row 2 twice (3, 4) times or until you reach 1.5” (1.75”, 2”) [Toe A on diagram]. This length is marked as Toe A on the diagram below.  Fasten off and leave a 12” tail for seaming toe later.

Bootie footbed/sole:

Measure from each end of your foundation row 2.25” (2.75”, 4.25”) [Side C on diagram] toward the center and mark with stitch markers.  Be sure to leave 7 (9, 12) sts between markers for the footbed/sole. The footbed/sole should measure approx 1.75” (2.25”, 2.625”) wide [Toe B on diagram].

Leaving an 18” yarn tail, make a slip knot and place it on your hook.

Row 1: Slip st into first st by marker to join. Sc into 1st st. Sc across 7 (9, 12) sts.

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in 1st st. *Sc in next st. Rep from * across.

Repeat Row 2 until you reach 2.25” (3.25”, 4.25”) [Side D on diagram]. Fasten off and leave a 12” tail for seaming.

Seaming Bootie:

NOTE:  You will need to overlap each bootie differently to get a right and left bootie.

Right Bootie:  To make the right bootie seam the Left Side FIRST then overlap the Right Side and seam it.

Left Bootie:  To make the left bootie seam the Right Side FIRST then overlap the Left Side and seam it.

Follow diagram to sew seams.  Seam on the outside of the bootie using tails to sew using a whip stitch.

Seam as follows:

  1. Place bootie piece on your work surface.
  2. Fold one side over the top of the Footbed/Sole.
  3. Stitch Side C to Side D (blue lines in diagram) first using one of the nearest 18” tails.
  4. Align Toe A to Toe B (red lines in diagram) and stitch together with remaining tail.
  5. Repeat Steps 2-4 with other side of bootie.
  6. Weave in all tails.

The following tutorial videos show each step of the crochet Marshmallow Moccasin Baby Booties pattern from start to finish.

Note: On the video, I said the incorrect number of stitches for the largest size in the bootie footbed/sole section. It should be 12, not 19.  The pattern above is correct.
