How to Crochet: Easy Linen Stitch Cowl

How to Crochet: Easy Linen Stitch Cowl

Inside: Learn to make the crochet easy linen stitch cowl with this free pattern and tutorial video. Includes tips to help you customize the pattern.

I’m always inspired to make cozy projects in the winter. And with the temps we’ve had this week I need this bulky cowl to keep off the chill.

The Easy Linen Stitch Cowl is a fast project to crochet. And as the name suggests it’s easy enough for a beginner to make.

I think the linen stitch is one of those stitch patterns that just flies off your hook. That makes it perfect for working on while binge watching your favorite show or listening to a podcast. With a simple one round repeat, after the first few rounds you don’t even need to look at the pattern anymore.

I recently taught all about the crochet linen stitch and one of the patterns I created for those lessons was the Easy Linen Stitch Hat. I had enough yarn left over that I decided to make a matching cowl. This pair would make a beautiful set to give as a gift!

The Easy Linen Stitch Cowl keeps you cozy on even the coldest days.  This bulky weight cowl is worked all in the linen stitch for a quick project.  I’ve included detailed instructions for the pictured cowl and notes to guide you if you want to adjust the size.  This pattern matches my Easy Linen Stitch Hat.

GAUGE

14 sts x 16 rows in 4” (10 cm) in linen stitch

SKILL LEVEL Easy

MEASUREMENTS

28” circumference x 8” high (71 cm x 20.5 cm)

NOTES

This cowl is worked in the round. The linen stitch is a multiple of 2 and begins with chaining an even number.

To make the cowl larger around, increase the length of your starting chain.  For a shorter cowl, use fewer chains.  Example:  With my gauge, I got 3.5 stitches per inch. To increase the circumference of my cowl by 6 inches, I’d add 22 chains since I need an even number of chains.  (3.5 x 6 = 21)

To adjust the width of the cowl simply crochet more rounds for a wider cowl or fewer for a narrow one.

INSTRUCTIONS

Chain 112 and join with a slip stitch in the round.

NOTE: Make sure your starting chain is not twisted before joining. Do this by laying it flat on your workspace and gently curve the beginning of the chain around to your hook. (See video.)

Rnd 1: Ch2 (counts as first sc & ch). *Skip next ch. *In next ch, Sc, ch1. Rep from * until 1 ch rem. Sc in last ch. Sl into beg ch.

Rnd 2: Ch1. Sc into same st below ch (or alternatively into sl st), ch1. *In next ch-sp, Sc, ch1. Rep from * until 1 ch-sp rem. In last ch-sp Sc. Sl to join into ch. (Slipping into first chain counts as final chain for round.)

Rep Rnd 2 until you reach 8″ (20.5 cm) or to desired length. Fasten off. Weave in tails.
