I always called my grandma, Mamaw. After Mamaw passed away my grandfather, Papaw, gave me some of her knitting needles. Included with the needles was, of course, some yarn, and a special treasure.

I have Mamaw’s handwritten dishcloth pattern with her partially finished dishcloth still on the needles!

I remember Mamaw knitting this pattern. It was the “go to” pattern for everyone back then. It was a favorite with good reason. It’s simple to knit, easy to memorize and is easily adjusted to any size.

Knit this iconic dishcloth from corner to corner in garter stitch by using some simple increases and decreases.  Once you learn the techniques this pattern will be sure to become your favorite too.

MATERIALS

Yarn
Medium (#4) weight cotton yarn
Bernat Handicrafter Twists (43g / 1.5 oz, 62 meters / 68 yards) used in sample.

Needles 
US 7 (4.5 mm) Knitters Pride Dreamz Interchangeable Needles used in sample.  

Tapestry needle

ABBREVIATIONS
K = Knit
K2tog = Knit 2 together
K3tog = Knit 3 together
YO = Yarnover
Rep = Repeat
RS = Right side
St(s) = Stitch(es)
WS = Wrong side

GAUGE
17 sts x 34 rows = 4” x 4” (10 x 10 cm) in garter stitch (before washing)

SKILL LEVEL Easy

MEASUREMENTS 
Approx 8.5” x 8.5” (21.5 x 21.5 cm)

NOTES
Longtail cast on recommended. 

INSTRUCTIONS

Cast on 3 sts.

Foundation Row (WS): Knit 3.

Row 1 (RS): K2, yo, k1. [4 sts]

Row 2: K2, yo, knit to end of row. 

Repeat Row 2 until 48 sts on needles or continue until desired length and even number of stitches. 

Row 3: K1, k2tog, yo, k2tog, knit to end of row. 

Repeat rows 3 until 5 sts remain. 

Row 5: K1, k2tog (twice)  [3 sts]

Row 6: K3tog. 

Cut tail and pull through last loop to fasten off. Weave in ends.
